City Cheer/ Pom Championship - An Evening of Color and Pageantry posted: Mar 9, 2009
| There is a little hidden jewel in the SSSAD family, an entertainment piece unlilke any other. It can be found at various times during the sport year, but the glitz, glamour and pizzaz of the Cheer and Pom City Champioship is an extravaganza unlike any other activity that SSSAD offers, a don't miss entertainment piece for the entire family. Wednesday March 18 features the Cbeer / Pom City Championship - 7 PM at Bedford Raod Collegiate. Athletic, articstic, at times acrobatic perfection in both Junior and Senior levels of competition in cheer are offered and delicious dance, professionally choreaographed routines and colorful costuming are featured in the pom category. The two hour spectacle is an enthusiastic eventing of skill, talent and fun, testament to the hours of preparation that go into competing for city championship honors. Capacity crowds have long kept the secret of one of the most entertaining evenings on the SSSAD calendar, but 2009 will include an even greater number of schools and an even greater variety of song and dance numbers than in the past.
Featured in the pom category are the Bedford Road Redmen, Tommy Douglas Tigers, Centennial Chargers, Walter Murray Marauders and Marion Graham Falcons. Marion Graham enters the evening as the 2009 Provincial Champions and the 2008 defending City Champions. Traditioally, one of the annual contenders for the championship, Marion Graham brings a well rehearsed and outstanding choreographed peformance to center stage and the bright lights of the City Championship. They will be one of the favorites again in 2009. Proof of the creative flare of the pom competition is the Bedford Road Redmen who bring their version of the "Deal or No Deal" TV concept with a song and dance number which is breathtaking. Also improved from 2008 is the Centennial Chargers. Smooth as silk, the Chargers look polished and ready in all their splendor of traditional and modern hip hop dance numbers and could be poised to challenge for a team title. The color, costumes and pageantry of dance/pom is relatively new on the scene, but gets the capacity crowds out of their seats and joining in on the fun and flare.
Also, featured on the program is the Cheer championship which includes all the stunts and tumbles, a combination of dance, gymnastics and acrobatics. Bedford Road enters the competition as the defending City Champions and 2009 BRIT Champions. They along with the Bedford Junior Cheer team, Bishop Mahoney, Aden Bowman, Marion Graham and Tommy Douglas Jr and Sr. Teams.will all be ready to deliver on championship night. Cheer has come a long way over the years, and a showcase of balance, twists, turns, pyramids and sommersaults add to the athletic nature of the event.
Also on the program will be a variety of exhibition showcase dance and cheer groups. Hip Hop and Modern dance numbers from groups around the city will perform and young cheer groups longing for the opportunity to be on center stage will be included in the program.
Bedford Road Collegiate - 7 PM on March 18 is where you want to be for a can't miss showcase of high school talent. No need for Dancing with the Stars, or You Think You Can Dance, SSSAD has its own surprises on the dance and cheer card. It will be an evening you won't forget.. Bring a friend and enjoy the unique and creative numbers of the Saskatoon High School Cheer and Pom City Championship.

Cheerific Pomp and Circumstance: Falcons and Redmen Champs Mar 19, 2009
There was plenty of pomp and circumstance and a whole lot of cheer at the 2009 City Cheerleading and Pom Championship at Bedford Road. The 1100 highly appreciative crowd enjoyed an entertaining 2 hours of performances from cheer and pom teams from across the city as well as community dance groups , baton dance acts and all star cheer teams.who helped fill the dance card. The excitement, however, was in declaring a 2009 city champion in cheer and pom competition, the critics being a panel of 10 judges evaluating the choreography and every punch, kick. glide and rotation. The competition was anticipated to be highly competitive and it didn't disappoint. Marion Graham, the defending City Champiions and current SCA Provincial Champions captured their 4th consecutive title in the Pom category and the Bedford Road Sr. Cheer team captured its third consecutvie title in the Cheer competition. Tommy Douglas took top honors in the Jr. Cheer category.
It was expected to be a tight finish in the Pom competition, and that is exactly how it played out. Marion Graham set the tone early and the bar high.in the competition with a routine full of color and pizzaz. The routine was sharp and well executed and was certainly a measure from which to judge the others. Walter Murray and Tommy Douglas had outstanding routines as well. Bedford Road in a routine as creative as you will ever see parodied the Deal or No Deal television show and had the girls begin their routine to the music and prelude of the opening of the game show before sending the crowd into a pickle with a highly charged act. The Redmen were on their game and hit the routine at level unseen by the group this year. Centennial concluded the pom squads and dazzled the crowd with a creative routine full of a great variey of song and dance. In the end, Marion Graham was able to reclaim the city title with a score of 156. Bedford closely followed with a 154 total and Centennial was third with 148.
In cheer compeitition, all squads looked sharp and showed great improvement from their first competition back in January at the BRIT competition. Great stunts, and eye catching balance and athleticism were on display. Bedford Road impressed the judges, totalling a score of 169 to take the gold medal. Marion Graham was sharp in registering a total of 155, capturing the silver medal. and Aden Bowman impressed in their first year of competition, finishing third with a score of 122.
Filling out the evening were some impressive demo acts. Prairie Fire cheer team engaged the crowd as did the Saskatchewan All Star Cheer Team. Elementary aged athletes showed some promise when they performed some cheer numbers. Baton teams entertained and Hot Pink Sneakers, a Hip Hop group in Saskatoon concluded the evening with a highly creative and entertaining number.
It was a great evening of entertainment and memorable song and dance. Athletes and spectators alike enjoyed the peformances and look forward to another season in 2009 - 2010. |
