Souls Speed and Triangle of Terror Tames Cats posted: Nov 2, 2008
| In a game which was intriguing purely on the unknown element of unfamiliarity which featued the 3A League Champions playing up a dvision in the 4A playoffs against the Walter Murray Marauders, the Souls used the same formula for success which had them undefeated after 6 contests and showed they are moe than one dimensional.
Souls have relied heavily on the arm of Marshall Dean, who also doubles as a Saskatoon Yellow Jacket hurler in the spring season, but they showed Walter Murray and other interested onlookers that speed kills. Dean can hurl it alright, but speedsters Kyle McGinnes and Graham Unruh are gifted at finding time and space to make the catch and also gain significant yards after the catch. Whether on deep routes or short hitch, hook or crossing routes, the pair are giving the defensive secondary of their opposition fits. Pay too much attention to this dynamic duo or triangle of terror and Hugh Weir will tear up some yards on the ground. All three are elusive, speed and strength making it difficult for defenders to make the tackle single handedly. Also not being overlooked is the time Dean is getting to throw the ball, and the underrated offensive line must be credited for protecting the quarterback. Their defense, unrecognized throughout the season has matured and limiting scoring opportunites of its opposition.
In 1/4 final action, Walter Murray slowed the Soul assault with good tackling and sound defensive zone awareness, along with the help of untimely and uncharacteristic drops by some sure handed receivers. It took the Souls until midway through the second quarter to get their first major of the game. It also cued the Soul reliance on their unheralded ground game which started to work nicely the more the game moved on. The SSSAD turning points of the game came with 15 seconds remaining in the second quarterwhen a Walter Murray third down gamble inside the Hard...

| Stars Aligning in Bethlehem\'s First Season on Senior Circuit posted: Oct 23, 2008
| The Bethlehem Stars will compete in their first ever Sr. Football Game in school history in 1/4 final action on Thursday October 24 versus the top seeded Bears from Aden Bowman. One shouldn't be deceived by the Star's record during 3A league play. Bethlehem has had an impressive first season of varsity action and the improvement of the club has been noticeable from day one. Faced with arguablly the most difficult schedule in 3A action, the Stars are a formidable opponent regardless of the league that gets your attention. Regardless of the outcome of thier 1/4 final game versus the heavily favored Bears, you know the Stars are shining bright for years to come with football at Bethelhem.
The Stars have been faced with adversity of some kind from the beginning of their first campaign in senior football action. In only the school's second year of existence, Bethlehem has been playing without any Grade 12 leadership from their own school. Furhermore, the school honorably took on several ED Feehan student athletes interested in playing football after the Trojan program folded following declining enrollments. The unselfish nature of the Stars, however, pushed them into a higher category according to SHSAA bylaws and the Stars made the move to the 4A category for their first playoff experience in school history. Despite the record of 1-5 in 3A play, the learning curve for the Stars has been steep, and gradual. Facing all the top seeds in the 3A league throughout the season has helped Bethlehem prepare for the Bears, defending City and Provincial Champions. They might have put together their most solid four quarter effort of the season against the #1 seed in 3A play, the Centennial Chargers in the final night of league play. Nearly upsetting the Chargers and knocking them out of the #1 seed position must have given the Stars some confidence and helped the coaching staff see that their ef...

| Souls Lead FourA of Teams to New Challenge in Playoffs posted: Oct 22, 2008
| The Evan Hardy Souls were undefeated in 3A competition, winning the 3A league title with an impressive 6-0 record and will now prepare for a new challege as they move to the 4A playoffs beginning October 23. Joining the Souls in the move to the highest division will be Bethlehem, Prince Albert Carlton, and Prince Albet St. Mary. The teams will now take a wait and 4see approach with a bye week prior to the start of the 4A playoffs.
Evan Hardy will assume the 5th seed position in the 4A playoffs with the top 4 seeds reserved for the current 4A league competitors. Prince Albert Carlton with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss will take the 6the seed. Prince Albert St. Mary (2-4) and Bethlehem(1-5) will tke the 7the seed and 8th seed positions. It remains unclear as to where the top 4 seeds in the 4A category will finish as their final league games of the season on October 17 will have all playoff postiions on the line. It has been a very competitive divison and the league title as well as seeds two, three and four will be at stake on the final night of league play. Their playoff match ups are also in question and the 3A transfers wait in anticipation to see who will be their first test and first challenge against relativvely unknown competition.
The Souls and the Prince Albert Carlton Crusaders will pose the biggest threat for the current 4A teams in the playoffs. With a combined record of 9-1, they have certainly proven themselves against 3A competition. The Souls have totaled well over 2000 yards in total offense over 6 games and arguably have the best passing game in Saskatoon High School Football behind the arm of Marshall Dean and skilled receivers such as Kylc McGinnis and Graham Unruh. Though lacking in size, the Souls have skilled people in the skill positions and rely on team speed on offense, defense, and special teams. As the weather changes and the ...

| Welcome Week Football Sets Attendance Record posted: Oct 8, 2008
| Welcome Week Football created all the thrill, chills, and spills that were expected and kicked off the high school season on a great note by breaking Welcome Week Football Game attendance records on the opening 2 nights of the football season. Anticipated thrillers, heated rivalries, traditional marches, and first time enthusiasts of the student kind and of the team kind brought the spectators out in record numbers as SSSAD celebrated the start of another sport year with record breaking attendance at Gordie Howe Bowl for Welcome Week and Week 1 of high school football. Not even the threatening skies and occasional downpour could dampen the spirits of spirited fans from schools throughout the season who got their first taste of high school football. All schools welcomed their new Grade 9's with free admission to Gordie Howe Bowl and schools brought bus load after bus load of fans to see their team for the first time of the year. Bethlehem Stars playing in their first competitive varsity football game packed the bowl to see their team just fall short to the Bishop Mahoney Saints in 3A action. Walter Murray and Holy Cross played a nail biting, lead changing thriller in front of a tremendous crowd in 4A action. All games proved the critics correct in creating some great competitive action.
If week one is any indication, high school football is going to create a lot of excitement and likely surpass all attendance expectations as fans anticipate season long "fun and games" in one of the most competitve high school football season in recent memory. Week 2 sees action shift to Griffith Stadium for another week of high school football ...

| Divsion Tightens Up with Thrilling Crusader Victory posted: Sep 21, 2008
| The first place showdown between Holy Cross and Aden Bowman and the quarterback pairing of Clayton Kroeker and Drew Berko to conclude the first half of league action in 4A football did not disappoint. Holy Cross with a last play of the game punt single finished the come from behind 15-14 victory in jaw dropping fashion. As a result of the Crusader victory, the Crusaders take a share of the lead with the Bears for first place in the 4A pool and the whole division tightens up, dramatically, the Guardians and Marauders just 2 points behind, which makes for a highly anticipated second half of the season.
The Bears took a 14-0 lead into halftime. Blake Reddekop with a dazzling 36 yard run and Drew Burko on an 18 yard naked bootleg scamper helped the Bears to the lead. Turnovers and costly penalties snuffed out Crusader drives and a third down gamble deep in Bear's territory failed and cost Holy Cross potential points in the first half and kept them off the scoreboard. However, the Crusaders had an outstanding 4th quarter and were able to sustain some drives without self-destructing and put up 2 majors of their own. 2 passes from Kroeker to Steve Borsyski , one from 10 yards out and one from 6 yards out put the Crusaders even with the Bears with less than 90 seconds remaining in the game.
With many fans believing a tie was inevitable in this highly emotional contest, the Bears, deep in their own zone, threw caution to the wind and through a deep ball with only 38 seconds remaining in the contest. The Burko pass was intercepted and returned to the Crudader 25 and a rough play call on the return put the Crusaders within yards of victory with only 24 seconds remaining. The Crusaders ran the clock efficiently and on the last play of the game punted the ball throught the endzone for the thrilling one point victory.
The outcome of the game was of interest t...

| Sr. Football 2008 Season Promises Parity and Feverish Intensity posted: Sep 9, 2008
| The SSSAD Sr. Football Schedule for 2008 heats up with newly aligned conference play will increase competitive balance and fans can expect some hotly contested games as teams compete for the best ranking leading to playoffs in 2008. 10 teams will compete in the 3A division with 4 teams competing in the 4A division.
In an effort to promote competitive balance league officials created a 10 team division featuring Bedford Road, Centennial, Mount Royal Prince Albert Carlton, and Prince Albert St. Mary in one 3A conference and Bethlehem, Bishop Mahoney, Evan Hardy, Marion Graham, and North Battleford in the other 3A conference.
Decreased enrollments in some schools created a need for realignment. Bethlehem enters its first season in varsity football and Evan Hardy, Bishop Mahoney, and Mount Royal drop to the 3A classification as a result of small enrollments.
The 4A division will have Aden Bowman, Holy Cross, St. Joseph, and Walter Murray competing for the first 4 spots in the 4A playoffs. Playing each other twice through the regular season, familiarity should make for some highly intense competition.
3A teams having an enrollment equalling that of the 4A schools will move to the 4A classification for the playoffs. All that said and done, the regular season will have some outstanding competitive nail biter, barn burner games with the playoffs featuring more of the same with the anticipated surprise of the unknown. Don't miss High School Football in 2008 on Thursday and Fridays through September and October at Gordie Howe Bowl and Griffith Stadium. ...

| Are you Ready for Some Football? Division Living Up to Its Name posted: Aug 23, 2008
| The 4A division promises to be the most competitive season ever when 4 teams line up against each other for league play. The 4A classification named for the schools with the largest enrollment in the province will now have as many teams as its label. Holy Cross, Walter Murray, St. Joseph and the defending City and Provincial Champion Aden Bowman will become very familiar with each other, playing twice against each other through the regular season. Each team will also have an exhibition encounter against an out of city rival to round out the 7 Game pre-playoff schedule. Familiarity with each other should raise the competive level of play and put more of a premium on preparation and execution, likely raising the intensity of play as well. All four teams will play for playoff seeds 1 - 4 with 3- 5 teams coming over from the 3A divisions for playoff games. The league and playoff hybrid structure with 3A and 4A football was created to ensure competitive balance and continue to promote the game and develop players within schools while respecting school enrollment numbers for playoff classification. Many schools are currrently in enrollment transition effecting classfication. Fans will be the benefactor of change for the 2008 season and will enjoy the quality of play and parity of play which will result from the competitive balance. See you at Gordie Howe Bowl and Griffith Stadium. ...
