Curling Champs Rock Solid in Final
posted: Feb 18, 2009

It might have been Friday the 13th, but the day proved lucky for some of the curling teams in the SSSAD City Curling Championship for boys, girls and mixed at the CN Curling Club.  The winners not only claimed the city crown but will represent Saskatoon at the Provincial Championships on March 5, 6, and 7.

In the boys final, St. Joseph jumped out to a commanding lead early in the match and cruised to an 11-0 victory over the Evan Hardy Souls, claiming the Gary Thode Memorial Trophy.   Playing without skip Alex Martin for the championship game made it tough for the Souls.  Tanner Hall subbing for the missing skip did an admirable job, but the Guardians were just too strong on the day. Dylan Wittig skiipped the championship team.  He along with third Quinn Hersikorn, second Jonathon Roth and Lead Graeme Bouvier will represent Saskatoon in Carrot River for the Provincial Championship.  It was a great playoff run for the Guardians (4-3) who were seeded fifth entering the championship game.  They saved fhe best for last in the Championship game, scoring multiple points in several ends of play.  The Bishop Mahoney Saints claimed the league title and the Granite Curling Club trophy which looks at combined success in both A and B curling leagues.  Tommy Douglas Tigers claimed the city crown in boys B curlling.

In girl's championship action, the Bishop Mahoney Saints used solid chemistry to first get them to the final and then successfully overcome a determined Centennial Chargers in the title game, taking home the Don Wilson Trophy.   The Saints had a 1 point lead heading to the last end and scored 2 more with the hammer to beat Centennial 6-3.  The Saints (2-4-1) were a seven seed entering the playoffs and finished a great run in the post season by beating the third seed Chargers (5-2) .  The final capped a strange playoff of upsets for the girls, which saw the top 4 teams in the rankings fall in the opening round of the playoffs and then have the Saints knock off the higher seeded Chargers.  The chemistry of the Saints, who have 3 sisters on the roster, was just too much for the chargers.  Kayla Fesser acts as skip and leads sisters Kortney, second, and Krista, lead.  Liz Szabo plays third with the Fesser trio.  The Saints will now go to to Spiritwood on March 5, 6, and 7 for the SHSAA Provincial Championship  The Centennial Chargers as a result of success in girls A and B curling claimed the Girgulis League Champion Trophy.   Holy Cross Crusaders claimed championship gold in girls B curling.

The mixed championship saw the Maron Graham Falcons cruise to a 13-5 victory over the Centennial Chargers.   The Falcons opened the scoring with a five ender in the first end and didn't look back.  The fast start was important for the Falcons who were very familiar with the Chargers. They beat the Chargers in the A Final, but lost to the Chargers in the B final and came up short against the Falcons earlier in the season in league play.  Skip Riley Struthers along with third Sarah Atamanenko, second Steven Simon and lead Breanna Zealand will now go to Kelliher, Saskatchewan for the SHSAA Provincial Championship on March 5, 6, and 7.

All three provinical bound teams will be great representatives for Saskatoon at the SHSAA Provincial Championships.
