Soulprise 2: - Hardy Wins Back to Back Badminton Titles May 1, 2009
The Soul Train just keeps making the right stops....at the City Bacminton Championship that is. For the second consecutive year the Souls came into the City Badminton Championship not being the league champions but go away with City Championship honors, winning back to back titles. Evan Hardy has had a long history of success in athletics but badminton titles have not hstorically been the story at the school, but the Souls have now won 2 City Badminton Championships to add to their impressive list of athletic accomplishments.
The city title even came as a pleasant surprise to coaches Alun Roberts and Tina Rioux but their put it all together when it mattered most. The Souls finished with 16 points, 6 ahead of second place finisher Walter Murray and 7 ahead of Marion Graham, the 2009 league Champions. The finals had Marion Graham and Evan Hardy competing in 3 of the 5 categories and the team title was hinging on the victors of those matches. Evan Hardy swept the Falcons in all 3 events to take city honors. In girs's singles, Alison Tomiyama of Evan Hardy beat Erin Baldwin of Marion Graham in straight sets, 21 - 9 and 21 - 9 to win the gold medal. Michelle Dmyterko of ED Feehan captured the bronze. In boy's doubles, Richard Kent and Joel Tomtene of Evan Hardy made short work of Cody Bnnner and Austin Boryski, winning the city title 21 -6 and 21 - 7. Jayce Cote and Sage Wiebe of Bishop Mahoney won the bronze medal. In girl's doubles Nayara Zafar and Carly Xu of Evan Hardy surprised Taelor Fredrickson and Marilyn McNally of Marion Graham 22-20 and 21 - 16 to win the doubles title. Kewtya Kurban and Micelle Rissling of holy Cross settled for bronze..
In boy's singles, defending City Champion, provincial champion and natiional champion Henry Pan of Walter Murray won his second consecutive city title with an impressive 21 - 13 and 21 - 8 victory over Max Gooding of ED Feehan. Eric Story of Aden Bowman won the bronze medal over Eric Yee of Mount Royal. Amy Mctavish and Jorday Christianson of Walter Murray won a close contest in mixed doubles to earn the mixed title. Then won in straight sets 21-19 and 21- 18. Craig Grey and Miranda Mark of Evan Hardy earned the bronze.
The top two finishers in each category earn a trip to a regional tournament on May 2 in Warman. The top 2 finishers in regional play will compete at the Provincial Championship on May 9 in Melville. Good luck Saskatoon athletes. |
