Centennial:Chargers: 2008 Soccer City Champions
posted: Oct 26, 2008
In a David and Goliath like story, the heavily favored Centennial Chargers won the 2008 soccer City Championship in convincing fashion over the upset minded Walter Murray Marauders.  There was not another Cinderella story on this day, as the Chargers played their best ball of the season, beating Walter Murray 5 nil, remaining undefeated on the year.

It was the first soccer city championship title in school history for the Chargers, who were ineligible for the 3A playoffs last year when they followed the 2A regional path and won the 2A Provincial Championship. It has been an impressive beginning in the sports history of the school, when you consider that this marks only the third year the school has been open, and 2 significant soccer titles have been earned to date.  The Chargers now have the opportunity as Saskatoon's #1 seed at the SHSAA Provincial Championship to capture the 3A Provincial Championship and win 2 titles in 2 separate categories in consecutvie years.

The Walter Murray Marauders were attempting to complete their dream like 2008 playoff run by beating another top seed after their 3-2 shoot out victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders, but the Chargers gave indication early that they were not going to let another title slip from their grasp in 2008.  Walter Murray played valiantly in the first half, but it was Centennial which led 1 nil afer the first half of play. It was all Centennial in the second frame.  In a dominating performance, the Centennial Chargers gave every indication why they are worthy City Championship title holders.  Displaying exellent ball skills, team defensive discipline,  offensive killer instincts. and outstanding team depth the Chargers left no doubt that they will be serious threats for another provinical crown in Weyburn on October 24 and 25.  Dallas Stern who led the first division in goals with 7 during the regular season and Chris Sarrazin w...

Marauders Earn Own Uniforms With Semi Stunner over Cross
posted: Oct 25, 2008

Walter Murray has something to talk about other than their 4 time champion cross country team.  They can play some soccer too. The Maruaders boys soccer team have put two consecutive solid soccer performances together to earn a trip to the championship game on Monday October 20, 7:15 PM at the Sasktel Sports Centre. The 3-3-1 #4 Marauders followed a 3-2 1/4 victory over the 3-3 1 #5 St. Joseph Guardians with a shocking 3-2 overtime second round, second striker shootout victory over the league champions and 2 time defending City Champions Holy Cross Crusaders.  It was an intense emotional thriller that highlighted semi final action in the Saskatoon High School Soccer Playoffs.

The Marauders certainly have some people shaking their heads.  They ae the epitome of what makes sport and high school sports in particular so intriguing.  It is why you play the game.  Regardless of the matchup, any team on any given day can make believers out of non-believers.  The Marauders might have gone missing on the radar of some soccer people around the league and in their own school, but that has suddenly changed.  The athletic apparel purchase department at Murray even mistakenly overlooked the squad in their fall line in 2008.  The team has been using borrowed soccer community jerseys all season. Like the comedian Rodney Dangerfield routine, these guys "get no respect"  Led by rookie coach Eric Rowley, this cast of relatively unknown characters, unheralded players, and so it seems under respected, under rated and under appreciated squad, have found their way to the City Championship Game.  They are in some ways a reflection of their coach, solid character, friendly, dignified and unassuming, solid ambassadors of their sport and their school and in every way a team.  You can now add soccer successes to their resume and  there is no denying they have earned an opportunity for a City Cha...

Cardiac Crazy: Soccer Playoffs Not for the Soft Hearted
posted: Oct 20, 2008

Whether you are a casual observer, proud supporter, player, or coach, you might want to bring a defibrillator if you are following the action in the soccer playoffs in 2008.  The soccer playoffs are cardiac crazy on both the boys and girls fronts and nerves have been on edge for extended periods of time.

There have been nail biting finishes in boys and girls action.  It would have kept fans at the edge of their seats if there were any at the Sasktel Sports Centre.   1/4 of the playoff games have needed extra time followed by a penalty shootout to declare a winner and a team to advance to the next round of the playoffs.  Competitive parody has not been seen on the pitch like this in years and anxious moments and great drama is being played out as a result of the evenly matched contests.  It may be a difficult and arguably controversial way to decide a contest, but the penalty kick shoot out certainly creates added excitement.   In quallifying action, the Walter Murray Marauders and Bethlehem Stars were tied at 2 goals each at the end of regular time and required extra time and a shoot out before Wallter Murray advanced to 1/4 final round play.  In girls 1/4 final action, 2 games were extended the distance before deciding a winner.  #4 Holy Cross and #5 St. Joseph went scoreless after regular time and were still at nil -nil after extra time.  Penalty kicks were required to decide a winner to advance to the semi-final, Holy Cross fortunate to advance to the next round.    Ashley Smolinsky of St. Joseph and Zoe Grace of Holy Cross were the keepers who had outstanding nights which kept their teams in the game until the final moments.  # 3 Evan Hardy and # 6 Centennial also required extra time and penalty kicks to decide a winner.   Both teams were scoreless after 35 minutes before the Souls took a 2 goal lead early in the second half.  Centennial ...

Centennial Strikers Send Notice
posted: Sep 16, 2008

As is the case with the football team, the Centennial Chargers boys and girls soccer teams have made the soccer folks around town stand up and take notice.  They have all been warned! The Chargers are back and they are for real.... at least early season success would suggest they are contenders for a city championship.

Should they be surprised?   The 2007 Chargers had an outstanding regular season campaign without any grade 12's on the squad in the SSSAD Soccer League,  slowly rising through the standings, and finishing very honorably in the middlle of standings as a 2A team in both boys and girls leagues.  Both Charger squads last year gained valuable experience through provincial qualifying, each winning their regional tournament and moving on to the Provincial Championship.   The girls earned a silver medal, losing a close game in the Provincial Championship and the Boys went on to win the Provincial Championship, the first in school history.

The Centennial boys team has had an impressive start to the 2008 season with victories over Bishop Mahoney and the two time defending city champions Holy Cross Crusaders 1 nil.   The Centennial girls team has also been impressive, losing 1 nil to the Provinical Champions Bishop Mahoney Saints and beating the Provincial Silver Medalists and City Finalists, the Holy Cross Crusdaders 4- 1.  Both teams in their first year of having a full contingent of Grade 9-12 students are serious contenders for the City Championship.

The regular season will prove if they will continue to grow and mature or fade with the fatigue of competing in a tough 3A league.  Watch the boys and girls soccer league for this intriguing plot in SSSAD soccer.

Take a Peak at the Pitch
posted: Sep 9, 2008
The highly anticipated 2008 soccer season hits the pitch again on September 8 and September 9 with one of the opening night games seeing the city finalists from 2007 - Holy Cross and Evan Hardy meeting at Sasktel Kinsmen Field at 7:30.  Both teams are expected to be leading contenders again for the city title.

Also likely to be the center of talk around the water coolers are the defending 2A Provincial Champions, the Centennial Chargers.  They will be in their second year of league action but enter their first foray into 3A playoff action with the big boys. Marion Graham and Bishop Mahoney are also rumored to have solid seasons.  Holy Cross are the defending 3A city champions.

Action takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout September and October.  See the soccer page for the commplete schedule...
