Stars Aligning in Bethlehems First Season on Football Senior Circuit posted: Nov 1, 2008
| The Bethlehem Stars will compete in their first ever Sr. Football Game in school history in 1/4 final action on Thursday October 24 versus the top seeded Bears from Aden Bowman. One shouldn't be deceived by the Star's record during 3A league play. Bethlehem has had an impressive first season of varsity action and the improvement of the club has been noticeable from day one. Faced with arguablly the most difficult schedule in 3A action, the Stars are a formidable opponent regardless of the league that gets your attention. Regardless of the outcome of thier 1/4 final game versus the heavily favored Bears, you know the Stars are shining bright for years to come with football at Bethlehem.
The Stars have been faced with adversity of some kind from the beginning of their first campaign in senior football action. In only the school's second year of existence, Bethlehem has been playing without any Grade 12 leadership from their own school. Furthermore, the school honorably took on several ED Feehan student athletes interested in playing football after the Trojan program folded following declining enrollments. The unselfish nature of the Stars, however, pushed them into a higher category according to SHSAA bylaws and the Stars made the move to the 4A category for their first playoff experience in school history. Despite the record of 1-5 in 3A play, the learning curve for the Stars has been steep, and gradual. Facing all the top seeds in the 3A league throughout the season has helped Bethlehem prepare for the Bears, defending City and Provincial Champions. They might have put together their most solid four quarter effort of the season against the #1 seed in 3A play, the Centennial Chargers in the final night of league play. Nearly upsetting the Chargers and knocking them out of the #1 seed position, must have given the Stars some confidence and helped the coaching staff see that their ...

| Mustangs Wild About Playoff Chances posted: Oct 20, 2008
| The Mount Royal Mustangs have a habit of saving the best for last. In 2007, they played their most physical and well executed football late in October, upsetting the much heavier favored Holy Cross Crusaders in the playoffs. They are hoping for a repeat performance of that kind of playoff success when they battle the top seeded Centennial Chargers in semi final 3A football on Wednesday October 22. They have a lot of work ahead of them, but the positive memories from 2007 are sure to help whip the Mustanges to a solid effort.
Inconsistency has been a great concern for the Mount Royal team in 2008. Injuries and inexperience have contributed to the team looking solid one week, and very vulnerable at other times. Struggling with moving the ball, or converting opportunities in the red zone have plagued the Mustangs throughtout the season on offense. They enter the playoffs with one of the lowest points for totals in the league, but their production has improved in the playoffs. Defensively, they have looked like the most physical team in the league at times, but vulnerable to giving up the big play at the worst time. However, they may have just put together their most consistent 4 quarters of the season in their 1/4 final victory over the higher seeded Bedford Road Redmen. They capitalized on their offensive chances and eliminated giving up the big play on defense. A well balanced run and pass attack was featured on offense and the defense reached a new level of physical play and emotional intensity.
Brett Piscio has returned from injury and controls the middle of the Mustang defense at the middle linebacker position and is one of the leage leaders in tackeles. He, along with Zane Fentiman on the outside are largely responsible for stopping the run for Mount Royal and have brought a punishing presence to the Mustang defense. The defensive ba...

| Welcome Week Football Sets Attendance Record posted: Oct 8, 2008
| Welcome Week Football created all the thrill, chills, and spills that were expected and kicked off the high school season on a great note by breaking Welcome Week Football Game attendance records on the opening 2 nights of the football season. Anticipated thrillers, heated rivalries, traditional marches, and first time enthusiasts of the student kind and of the team kind brought the spectators out in record numbers as SSSAD celebrated the start of another sport year with record breaking attendance at Gordie Howe Bowl for Welcome Week and Week 1 of high school football. Not even the threatening skies and occasional downpour could dampen the spirits of spirited fans from schools throughout the season who got their first taste of high school football. All schools welcomed their new Grade 9's with free admission to Gordie Howe Bowl and schools brought bus load after bus load of fans to see their team for the first time of the year. Bethlehem Stars playing in their first competitive varsity football game packed the bowl to see their team just fall short to the Bishop Mahoney Saints in 3A action. Walter Murray and Holy Cross played a nail biting, lead changing thriller in front of a tremendous crowd in 4A action. All games proved the critics correct in creating some great competitive action.
If week one is any indication, high school football is going to create a lot of excitement and likely surpass all attendance expectations as fans anticipate season long "fun and games" in one of the most competitve high school football season in recent memory. Week 2 sees action shift to Griffith Stadium for another week of high school football ...

| Marshall Dean Riding with Passing Posse posted: Sep 21, 2008
| The Evan Hardy Souls are led by the arm of Marshall Dean in the 2008 footballl campaign and host of weapons to choose from with his posse at Evan Hardy make the Souls a dangerous matchup. Most recent, a 478 yard passsing gem against the Bethlehem Stars has made coaches in both the 3A and 4A football divisions stand up and take notice. Whether it will be a team in the 3A playoffs or 4A playoffs remains in question, though most see the souls as heading to the 4A division for the playoffs, September 30 enrooment wil settle the issue.
With over 1000 yards passing in 3 games, the Souls have started the season undefeated and will pose a threat to any team's season of playoff dreams. Another question facing the Souls prior to their week 4 matchup against unbeaten Centennal Chargers is how long can the Souls sustain their present passing frenzy as the temperature dips and the field at Gordie Howe Bowl looks more suited to an Ice Capades event than a football game? The Souls, however, have proven to be multimdimensional with their passing game. While keeping teams honest with the run, Hardy has shown the abiility to both go deep through the air as well as using the high percentage ball possession, chain moving short passing game. As good as the run, the short game has proven successful as athletes like Graham Unrah and Kyle McGinis have taken short routes and turned hitch and hook patterns into yards after the catch masterpieces.
Fun for the fans, Evan Hardy is an entertaining team to watch. With zip and some flair, Marshall Dean and his cast of receivers have put up a lot of points. With the opposition being stronger in the next 3 weeks particularly on defenseand the playoffs following shortly thereafter, the Souls will try to gun their way to shootout victories. Will teams find a way to slow the Souls down or can their o...

| Sr. Football 2008 Season Promises Parity and Feverish Intensity posted: Sep 9, 2008
|
The SSSAD Sr. Football Schedule for 2008 heats up with newly aligned conference play will increase competitive balance and fans can expect some hotly contested games as teams compete for the best ranking leading to playoffs in 2008. 10 teams will compete in the 3A division with 4 teams competing in the 4A division. In an effort to promote competitive balance league officials created a 10 team division featuring Bedford Road, Centennial, Mount Royal Prince Albert Carlton, and Prince Albert St. Mary in one 3A conference and Bethlehem, Bishop Mahoney, Evan Hardy, Marion Graham, and North Battleford in the other 3A conference. Decreased enrollments in some schools created a need for realignment. Bethlehem enters its first season in varsity football and Evan Hardy, Bishop Mahoney, and Mount Royal drop to the 3A classification as a result of small enrollments. The 4A division will have Aden Bowman, Holy Cross, St. Joseph, and Walter Murray competing for the first 4 spots in the 4A playoffs. Playing each other twice through the regular season, familiarity should make for some highly intense competition. 3A teams having an enrollment equalling that of the 4A schools will move to the 4A classification for the playoffs. All that said and done, the regular season will have some outstanding competitive nail biter, barn burner games with the playoffs featuring more of the same with the anticipated surprise of the unknown. Don't miss High School Football in 2008 on Thursday and Fridays through September and October at Gordie Howe Bowl and Griffith Stadium. ...

| SSSAD Designs Own Big Ten Conference posted: Aug 23, 2008
| The NCAA may have its historic Big Ten Conference but SSSAD has one of its own with the newly aligned Big Ten Conference but for smaller schools. 10 Teams will strike out on their own in 3A league play in two divisions. One division will feature Bedford Road, Centennial, Mount Royal, PA Carlton, and PA St. Mary. The other division will feature Bethlehem, Bishop Mahoney, Evan Hardy, Marion Graham and North Battleford. Teams will play a game against all opponents in their divison and cross over and play two teams from the other divison. Adding to the intrigue will be that 3- 5 teams will be moving to the 4A Conference for the playoffs which has interesting implications for all teams in both conferences. Mount Royal, Bishop Mahoney, and Evan Hardy along with Bethlehem playing in their first varstiy season will get their first taste of 3A action as a result of declining enrollments. Teams moving to the 4A conference for playoffs will be determined by enrollment at the mid point of the season. Marion Graham will attempt to defend its 3A City Championship but with all the changes the title is up for grabs for 2008. Don't miss any 3A gridiron action as competition will be fierce. ...
